Poetry Lesson Planning
Below is a sample lesson for educators, and parents to get children started with rhyming words.
1.) Choose A Poem:
- Allow students to choose 1 poem below to begin with. Click on the poem of choice.
- Ask them to identify the words that rhyme in the poem.
- Ask students to discuss what they see.
- Ask children for details in the picture. What colors are used in the picture? What is going on in the picture?
3.) Review Rhyming Words:
- Write down the rhyming words or say them out loud.
- Have students chime in on these words as you read the poems.
4.) Rhyme Starters:
- Ask students to use their imagination and to identify four words that rhyme. Write the rhyme starter on the board. For example, slug, hug, head,bed...see what bizarre descriptions they can create on their own:
I saw a brown slug
Climbing on a yellow jug
It crawled on my ....
5.) Draw A Picture:
- Ask students to draw a picture of their poem.
- Break them into groups to discuss what they wrote.
- Another idea is to have them work on the poem as homework and present it to the class.
